“Since we live in the heads of those who remember us, we lose control of our lives and become who they want us to be.”—
David Eagleman in “SUM: Forty Tales of the Afterlife.
He was discussing a possible purgatory where we all sit in this large waiting room, and we can only move on once we’re forgotten. At first it’s pleasant to be remembered, but it eventually becomes miserable and you beg to be forgotten. The room is crowded with historical figures, people with famous names, and infamous criminals. One man sits by as he is remembered as the war hero he was, but eventually people come to know him as a tyrant. He is no longer memorialized for his accomplishments, but he still cannot leave as his name lingers on. He painfully watches as children learn to bastardize him.
I feel this quote is true for the living as well. Our personality is not merely how we behave, but how we are perceived by others. We are who they think we are.
